The guys from Motor Trend Classics were looking for a location to shoot photos of the late, great GM A body muscle cars. They were bringing together two of the last heavy weights. The 1971 Oldsmobile 442, W-30 and the 1972 Buick GS 455, Stage 1. Motor Trend had chosen a 442 owned by Mike Bivins in Atlanta, Georgia, a member of the Dixie Olds Club. Motor Trend's choice for the GS is owned by Paul Haddock in North Carolina, a member of the Gran Sport Club of America's Carolinas Chapter. It was obvious that this meeting had to happen in South Carolina. But where? In their search for middle ground, they contacted So-Car for suggestions. But these guys had already found a really good location on their own...
The Esso Club in Clemson, South Carolina.
Todd Lassa, Detroit Editor for Motor Trend (right) and photographer, Daniel Bryne (left) are putting together an excellent retrospective view of this early 1970’s intra-GM rivalry. You need to check out Motor Trend Classics for the rest of the story and some really cool shots of these cars.
